IndiaEC Reshuffles Bengal Top Cops Day After Poll Schedule Announcement

The Election Commission of India has reshuffled senior West Bengal police officials, including the DGP and Kolkata Police Commissioner, ahead of the Assembly polls. The decision was made after a review of poll preparedness in the state.

The poll panel appointed IPS officer Siddh Nath Gupta as the new Director General of Police, replacing Peeyush Pandey. Supratim Sarkar was removed as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police and replaced by Ajay Kumar Nand.

The changes were made in an official communication to the state government, which was directed to implement the orders immediately. The poll body also instructed the state government to submit a compliance report by 3 pm on Monday.

Additionally, the Election Commission ordered the transfer of senior officers in the West Bengal government, including the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary. Dushyant Nariala (IAS-1993) has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal, replacing Nandini Chakraborty. Sanghamitra Ghosh (IAS-1997) has been appointed as Principal Secretary, Home and Hill Affairs, Government of West Bengal.

The commission specified that the officers who have been transferred out of their positions should not be assigned any election-related responsibilities until the completion of the polls.
