Induction Cooktops in High Demand Amid LPG Shortage Fears in Chandigarh
Fears of LPG shortages triggered by supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict have led to a surge in demand for induction cooktops across the country. In Chandigarh, retailers reported empty shelves and a significant increase in sales, with some households rushing to switch cooking methods.
According to Nitin Kansal, proprietor of Bharat Crockery in Chandigarh, the store sold 200 units of induction cooktops in just four hours, exceeding their annual average sale of around 100 pieces. The surge in demand started on March 10, with some families buying multiple units, fearing the crisis would drag on.
Retailers reported that the first consignments of induction cooktops arrived at older prices, but the cost of new stock quickly rose. Brands such as Sunflame and Prestige increased prices by 7-15%, while some suppliers raised rates by as much as 20-25%.
The rush for induction cooktops was also visible among domestic workers and households trying to secure an alternative cooking option. Neelam Kumari, a housekeeper in Chandigarh, rushed to buy an induction plate after her employers bought two hot plates and several utensils in the light of the LPG shortage.
Retailers noted that induction cooktops are useful only when paired with compatible cookware, which has also seen a surge in demand. Egg and milk boilers are also seeing fresh demand as households try to cut down on daily LPG use.
